Ronald L. Mellom's Obituary
Ronald L. Mellom, 77, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Georgene, and his daughter, Deborah.
Ron graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane and attended Gonzaga University for one year. He then served five years in the U.S. Navy, serving on an aircraft carrier during the Korean War. Ron graduated from Washington State College with a degree in music education and accepted his first position teaching music in the Clover Park School District, and from 1960 to 1963 was the band and orchestra director at Clover Park High School. Eventually, Ron pursued employment with IDS/American Express as a financial planner, and advanced to the role of district manager. With his co-workers, Ron was a coach and mentor, intuitive and patient. When Ron retired after 37 years, he renewed his involvement in music that continued to grow with commitment to daily practice. He was most at home taking care of his long-time residence and property in Steilacoom, or fishing on a quiet lake, or practicing the guitar and piano. In the company of his wife and daughter, Ron often fondly remembered his childhood friends, naval experience, musical training, and the people he connected to during his career. He was most proud when he could contribute to the success and well-being of the people he loved.
Funeral services and reception will be Monday, March 2, 2009, 4:00 p.m. in the Aspen Chapel, Mountain View Celebration of Life Center, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood. Donations for a Clover Park School District music scholarship may be made to Retired Women in Education (RWE), P.O. Box 88572, Steilacoom, WA 98388.
