Ronald Groth's Obituary
Ronald L. Groth--beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend--passed away suddenly on April 28, 2015, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Ron was born on December 8, 1946, in Longview, Washington, to Orlin and Leona Groth, who have predeceased him. Ron is survived by his daughter Amy Gisvold, his granddaughter Chloe Gisvold, his sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Terry Esau, and nephews Alex and Cody Esau.
Ron grew up in Castle Rock, WA, where he enjoyed many outdoor activities and excelled in athletics. He was a strong swimmer, served as a lifeguard, and became a “star” basketball player at Castle Rock High School. After graduating, he attended Pacific Lutheran University on a basketball scholarship and earned a degree in education with emphases in math and geology. Ron taught in the Clover Park School District for 30 years, primarily at Oakwood Elementary, and also served as coach for many sports teams at a variety of levels in the district.
Ron remained active in the outdoors and in sports throughout his life, enjoying camping, hiking, bow hunting, running, and participation with baseball, basketball, and volleyball leagues over many years. Volleyball became a particular interest, and Ron competed regionally and nationally with a close-knit group of teammates and friends who earned a Gold Medal at the 1999 US Volleyball Association’s Master’s National Championship in San Jose, CA.
Ron cherished his daughter Amy, and his granddaughter Chloe became the light of his life the moment she was born. They spent many happy times together, and Ron became known as “Grandpa Jeep” after his favorite mode of transportation. They would argue adorably (“You’re my favorite,” followed by, “No, you’re MY favorite”), and Amy has discovered it nearly impossible to find a recent photo of Ron without Chloe by his side.
Ron’s easy-going nature and good humor made it easy for those who knew him to love him. He had only friends—no enemies. God bless Ron’s life, memory, and spirit—he will be missed by all and never forgotten.
Please join Ron’s family and friends in a celebration of his life on Sunday, May 17, at 1pm, at Mountain View Funeral Home Aspen Chapel, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood, WA.
