Roger Rue in the Caribbean
In 2008 several of us in CCA (Cruising Club of America) went on the Antigua cruise of that year. After the cruise, we had planned to continue down the island chain to Bequia before returning home. As word of our plans got around, Roger Rue, a member of the club, approached my wife, Janie, and gave her a card with the name, “Parnell”, on it, and asked us to please look him up when we got to Bequia.
We asked who Parnell was, which led to quite a story from Roger. He said he had been cruising in the Caribbean many years before, and came across a young boy 10 or 12 years old who was suffering from a severe and obvious skin infection. Roger rummaged in the first aid locker on his boat and began treating the boy with antiseptics and antibiotics, taking the boy, Parnell, under his wing. As the boy healed, Roger took him aboard for a bit of cruising in the Grenadines, and introduced him to skin-diving and other cruising pleasures, eventually dropping him off back on Bequia.
We asked Roger how we could find Parnell. He said, “Just ask anyone on the dock or beach in Elizabeth Harbor for Parnell; they’ll know who he is”. With some skepticism we said we’d give it a go.
When we anchored in Elizabeth Harbor Janie and I went ashore with card in hand, and approached the first taxi that showed up at the dock. We asked him if he might know someone by the name of Parnell. “Yeah, mon,” he replied; “Everybody knows Parnell. I’ll go get him for you.” Soon Parnell Hutchison arrived, a small man who had become well known for auto repair on the island, and who we learned had a family and his own business tucked away outside town. Roger had further helped him with tools and equipment he needed for his business. We were shown around the island, and even included in a beach party his extended family had been planning on the southeast shore. It was a wonderful experience for us, but more importantly it was because of Roger Rue and his kindness – and even life-saving actions – that made it all possible.

I grew up across the street from Roger in Barnes, PA. His home was called "The Cottage" and mine was "The Homestead." They both were originally owned by my father's uncle, Byron Horton. I remember in particular sitting at the Cottage with Roger when he was at PSU and him drawing on a pad, and his mom going to PSU for "educated eggs." We also traded blueprints and materials list at his mother's funeral for The Cottage. His parents were great folks too. I worked with his Dad for a few years too. To Roger's family, I too feel a loss as he and his parents were a real part of my very early years. Even though I now live near Pittsburgh, PA I do go back to my roots from time to time and drive by both our homes intentionally. Prayers to all.

I grew up with Roger Rue . We sang in the Warren Boy Choir for years.
His parents were very supportive of the choir and Roger.
We sang for a department store at Christmas one year and Roger wrote a jingle that we sang for the owner of the store. I believe Roger/the choir gave it to the store owner, as he used it for a number of years thereafter. Roger was a great friend to us . My brother Jim talked with Roger a few years ago at a Penn State reunion and reviewed fond memories. A brilliant man with a kind and adventurous spirit. To be remembered by all who knew him.

Roger Rue was the son of Ora Rue, my dad's cousin, He probably won't remember me, but I came to visit him and his wife at this time of year in 1971. I was a student at Oregon State University and my hometown was Santa Barbara, CA. I loved Ora and Harland Rue so much, his parents. To his children and his wife, I'm so so sorry for your loss. I know the character and quality of Roger Rue, as he is like his superb parents. May God give you some peace at this time. Wendy Burbrink Benedetti
