Robert H. Scheller's Obituary
Robert Herbert Scheller was born in San Francisco on February 21, 1938 to Gertrude Agatha Mayer and Herbert Henry Martin Scheller.
He Graduated from Burlingame High School where he played football and also played the Sousaphone in the band. He had hoped to become a Physician, but money was scarce so while deciding, he joined the US Army. He attended Army Medical Service School and Fitzimmons Army Hospital in Denver and also Brooks Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He then worked at Madigan Army Hospital in Lakewood and then was sent to Korea. He was honorably discharged as an SP4.
He received his AA from College of San Mateo as valedictorian. From there he went to Whitman College in Spokane and joined Beta Theta Pi. He stayed one semester and missed the sunshine so transferred to San Francisco State where he received both his BA in Business and MS in Science. He applied to various graduate schools for his PhD and was awarded full rides to Harvard University Graduate School of Business; Columbia University Graduate School of Business in NYC; University of Michigan; University of Indiana and has a letter from the US Senate congratulating him on his award of a Stanford Sloan PhD Fellowship which he completed at Stanford University.
He taught Business at San Jose Jr. College and has an award from 1974 from the California Community Colleges that gives him the honor of teaching business and Industrial Management for life in California. This was issued by the Board of Governors of the Community Colleges of California.
He was a Notary and won a San Jose Real Estate Award in 1975.
Bob was a Safeway Manager in California for 10 years, then went to Lake Tahoe to run a restaurant. From there he came to Washington as his children became older, so they could get out of the California system and run a restaurant here for the same chain. Then he went on to become a Teamster at Best Pie Co. and Gai’s Bakery as a driver. Somehow he loved to be around food and loved to cook as many of us have eaten his meals at various Masonic functions or at home.
He married Karen Shelver-Stirts on January 1, 1990 and was then on his way through the Masonic organizations. First as a Master Mason at Southgate F & AM of Washington where he was Worshipful Master in 1996; District 6 President; Scottish Rite; Afifi Shrine where he was a Shrine Clown. He was also a member of the Elks and Highline United Methodist Church where he was in charge of the Sound Room, a Trustee and did various jobs around the building.
Bob loved his yard (but not the weeding) and he and Karen worked hard at keeping it beautiful. They also spent over 20 years fixing and landscaping their get-a-away home at Granite Falls on Lk. Bosworth. Not only did he love flowers, he loved MAUI and they spent at least 18 years going to their time-share condo there. He loved the warm sunshine. During the cold months here in Seattle, he read and watched every sport on TV. In 1998 they went to Norway to meet all of Karen’s relatives and he decided to become a Norwegian. He loved them all and also their desserts.
He also loved his dog and cats. They loved to sit on the deck with him in the sunshine, when we had it and follow him around the yard. They were his buddies.
Karen had 2 sons when he married her, and they were into scouts, music, church and sports so we spent time at lots of events with them. Then they came along with grand-kids for us to attend their games and events with them.
Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert Sean Scheller (also a Stanford Graduate where he played baseball and football). He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys after Graduation).
Bob is survived by his wife of 24 years, Karen. He has one daughter, Shannon Smith Hendrix (Pete) and grand-daughter Cora Smith (15). He has two step-sons, Steven Jeffrey Shelver (Tammy) and step grand-children, Jillian Hannah (13) and Ryan Mansfield Shelver (11). He did his best to attend every event they participated in whether it was sports, piano recitals, scouts or whatever. He was so proud of them.
The other step-son is Michael Scott Stirts (Becca) and 4 step-grandchildren, Kjersten Michelle (2) and Kjell Michael Stirts (1). Also Becca’s two sons, Nathan (13) and Ryan Cox (10). He didn’t really get to enjoy his 2 youngest ones but he would really grin when he got a chance to see them. He had pictures of all 6 grand kids by his chair so he could see them all of the time. Two sisters survive him, Anna Scheller Burgess of Fair Oaks, California and Lois Scheller Schwarz of Grants Pass, Oregon. One niece, Dawn Burgess Abshear (Jim) and great-niece, Grace (13) of Fair Oaks, California.
