Robert Raymond Burt's Obituary
Robert R. Burt, M.D. Dr. Robert R. Burt passed away on his 89th birthday, March 25, 2009. He was born in Portland, Oregon, March 25, 1920, but lived most of his life in Tacoma, WA where he graduated from Lincoln High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Puget Sound where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Dr. Burt obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Oregon Medical School and served his residency at Harborview Hospital in Seattle, Washington. He was appointed to a Fellowship in Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he received his surgical training with a specialty in Abdominal Surgery and was certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Burt entered the military as surgeon and obtained the rank of Captain in the Army Medical Corps. He was stationed at England General Hospital, a neuro-surgical center in Atlantic City, N.J. He was transferred to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where he was a Company Commander. Dr. Burt was a member of the Tacoma Surgical Club, (of which he was a past president,) a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Abdominal Surgery, The Priestly Society of the Mayo Clinic, and The American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. He served on the staff of Tacoma General Hospital, where he was Director of Interns, staffs of Saint Joseph, Doctor's, and Mary Bridge Hospitals, and was a past President of the Doctor's staff of Lakewood Hospital. He was a member of the Clover/Steilacoom Masonic Lodge, the Afifi Shrine, and the Scottish Rite. Bob was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf. He was a member of Oakbrook Golf and Country Club. He loved hiking in the mountains with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Lorna, daughter, Carolyn Burt of Tacoma; daughter Betty Moses, sister Beatrice Damron, grandson, Scott Bondy of Oregon; grand-daughter SPC Jeannette Tackett who is currently serving in Iraq; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held April 18, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Skyline Presbyterian Church, 6301 Westgate Blvd. N., Tacoma, WA 98406, 253-752-5757.
