Uncle Richard I will always remember when you gave us kids rides in your cool green dune buggy. The donuts or quick 360's you did while I was sitting in the back is one of my most fun and fondest memories ever. Love you much.

Deepest sympathy to Richards family. I knew Richard in the mid 1950's when we were in high school in Tracy,mn. He had a 1940 Ford that he sold to me. I really liked the car. He had the rear end lowered to about 6 inches from the ground. I remember that when I would drive out of an alley, it would drag on the street. He had purchased a 1950 Mercury. Very nice car. he would line it up on the railroad track in Amiret and drive it to Tracy on the tracks.I went with him several times, and there was a high railroad bridge to cross. I worried a little about that, but it didn't bother him. We separated ways after graduation, when I joined the Air Force in August. He did too, but I don't know when he enlisted.
One Sunday afternoon there were a bunch of us young folks at the Hanson farm, riding horses. I fell off the one I was riding onto a rock, and broke 3 ribs. Needed a strap on brace around my middle until school started. Richard was a very good friend and I always enjoyed time with him.
The Hanson’s were our next door neighbors when we moved into our home in 1991. We were so blessed to have had Richard right next door. He kept to himself for the most part, however, if you ever needed anything you knew who you could reach out to.
So sad to hear of Richard’s passing.
Our condolences to all who knew and loved him.

Hello Richard, after reading that you did not want to be called Dick, all of us guys at McChord called you that for ever. I retrained to calling you Richard when we came down to Yuma all of those winters. We sure did have a good time each winter walking and doing the desert in the buggy.
We had good times waxing our cars at the base park at McChord and of course a beer or two. Another time was when i was trying to water ski and did not make it.
I remember when pay days came in the service and we would all go to a pizza place just off base and we would order a large pizza each and a pitcher of beer each and we would finish our beers and our pizzas, now days i am only able to eat a couple of slices.
When i moved out there for a year i would come down to your first station on Saturdays and help wash cars or do a break job. It was a lot of fun and of course the shrimp pizza that was purchased from The New York Restaurant on 6th ave, man were they good.
I have sure missed you and Sharleen these last winters down in Yuma, they have been as much fun. You enlightened me a lot about VW's those winters. I am so glad we came out to Tacoma almost 5 years ago to visit you folks.
We all enjoyed watched professional wrestling in your room in the barracks and of course you had to try the Boston Crab hold on me a time or two. Miss those days.
Buddy, as you know, we became very much good friends all of those years.
Keep the VW's running in heaven.
Love you and miss you.

Hey Richard I bet you never knew I thought you looked like Elvis Presley... you know back when you had hair ha ha... I always valued your opinion .. and have great respect for you....one of the Richardisms is " watch out for the car that is in front of the one behind you"" then you would say do you know who that is?? and mom's was when sitting at a stop sign would say " there is always a safe time" .... When I think back over the years you had such a big heart and cared about so many... as I think back about all the people you helped at the station... not just customers but the kids that needed a little guidance..you helped so many... shows what a kind loving person you were..you touched so many people... I still run into people that remember the station at 6th and Howard.... what a small world.... will miss you Richard... especially my birthday call that I got every year.... and my special birthday card from you....will see you on the other side.... love your sister (favorite) Doreen
Memories at the “Station” , you were a huge part of our lives...my father respected you and was so proud to call you his friend. Memories of you will always bring a smile to my face and warmth to my heart!!! All my love to all Richards family and friends....I know they are all up there in the fluffy clouds catching up and looking down on us.....
So many memories of days spent at the station with you as a beebopping little girl running around. You always smiled when Johnny and I would come to work with Dad.. Johnny got to get greasy, I got to count money.. One day I noticed Everyone called you "Dick" i must of been 7 or around there. I thought to myself huh.. he's not "Dick" but ok.. so I said to you Dick and you looked at me and said I am not "Dick" to you. I am Uncle Richard. Lol never again did I call you by that name. You will be missed so much! Love you and someday we will see you again!!

Uncle Richard you will be so missed!! He was a big part of my teen years keeping my car running at his 76 gas station and auto repairs. He was always helpful and kind to me. One thing I remember him telling me is to “always watch out for the car in front of the one behind me!!” That always stuck with me and when I would do something stupid driving I would remember those words. Thank you for helping me and being a part of who I am today. With love Sonja.
