Richard Carl Granquist
May 23, 1929 --- September 18, 2023
Richard Carl Granquist, the son of Sigfrid Granquist and Mildred Mathis was born May 23, 1929 in Seattle Washington. He and his family lived in Ballard where he attended Ballard High School and graduated in 1946. He attended the University of Washington where he earned a Bachelor in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. He married his high school sweetheart Barbara Jean Tidemann, whom he met in high school on June 8, 1951. Richard went to work for Weyerhaeuser, where he and his family made numerous moves starting in Klamath Falls, Oregon for 5 years, followed by 2 years in Cosmopolis, Washington. After living in Cosmopolis he was transferred to the offices in Tacoma, Washington and they lived in FIrcrest for over 20 years. While living in Fircrest, Richard coached his son David’s baseball team for over 5 years.
After working for Weyerhaeuser for 32 years, he retired and moved to the Key Peninsula where he and Barb built a house overlooking Puget Sound. This is where they would reside for almost 19 years before moving to Lakeland Village in Allyn, Washington.
While living in Tacoma, he and Barbara were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. After moving to the Key Peninsula, they served as volunteer chaplains for the Key Peninsula Fire Department and as Stephen Ministers at Key Peninsula Lutheran Church. After moving to Allyn they both became active members of Christ Lutheran Church in Belfair.
Richard enjoyed gardening with Barbara as well as playing an occasional round of golf. He also never shied away from the chance to go trout fishing – either in a stream or on the lake.
After losing Barbara to a 4 year battle with Cancer in June 2017, a fall caused him to require a hip replacement, and he moved to Sound Vista Village Assisted Living facility in Gig Harbor Washington where he would reside for the next 5 ½ years. In May 2023, he suffered another fall which required him to leave Sound Vista and move to Gig Harbor Court Assisted Living facility where he resided until his death on September 18, 2023.
Richard is survived by his son David and his wife Rosa of Chula Vista CA, his daughter Tina and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Barbara and his daughter Wendy.
There will be a graveside committal service on Saturday., September 23, 2023 at 1:00PM at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial contributions be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 3701 NE North Shore Road, Belfair WA 98528.
