Raymond NeSmith's Obituary
On June 29, 2019, Raymond "Ray" NeSmith passed away peacefully while surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends. Ray was born on April 10, 1937 in Cecil/Hahira, Georgia, to the late Mr. Fred NeSmith and Mrs. Arletha Johnson-NeSmith.
Ray was educated in the Cook County Public School System where he met Bobbie R. Cross with the help of her brother, Fletcher, the two became friends. Following his graduation from high school, Ray joined the U.S Air Force in 1954 and he later married Bobbie R. Cross on December 6, 1957.
During his military career, Ray and Bobbie traveled and lived in many places, including Turkey, Taiwan, Germany, Texas, Florida and later at McChord Air Force Base in Lakewood, Washington. The couple shared a love for music, travel and cultivating their green thumbs by growing fruits, vegetables and the beautiful roses and other flowers that often adorned vases in their home during the Summer months. The couple loved to travel, frequently taking spontaneous trips to explore cities throughout the Northwest and across the United States. During these trips, they often found new shops, restaurants and other attractions that were unknown, even to the local residents.
Ray retried from the service at McChord Air Force Base in 1987 after 24 years in the Air Force. Prior to his retirement, he graduated from Highline Community College and opened a successful business, Real Kleen Janitorial Service, with his long-time friend and Air Force colleague.
Ray was very active with the Walk to Emmaus Community where he served as a leader and team member for several walks and other events. He also provided continued leadership and support to the Kairos Prison Ministry at the McNeil Island Penitentiary.
Ray has been described by many as a quiet, thoughtful, loyal, knowledgeable and unwavering friend and advisor with a wonderful sense of humor. He was very proud of his family and we all felt special and loved in his presence. Though he will be sorely missed, Ray leaves behind wonderful memories to comfort his family and friends.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 61+ years, Bobbie and their children, Michael (Sonita) of Round Rock, Texas; Janet of Lakewood, Washington and; Theresa of Atlanta, Georgia. The couple also has four grandchildren, NeCole, Lauren, Jarrett and Bryce and four great grandchildren and a son Joseph, who preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory, one aunt, Alline Manning, his sister Elizabeth Madden (Floyd) along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service celebrating his life will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in the Aspen Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Lakewood, WA.
