I remember Ray as a kind and gentle man with a great smile and a twinkle in his eye as he spoke. I worked as the secretary for Don Hansen starting in 1965 and shortly after the partnership of Hansen, Adams & Chalker, Engineers was established and I continued working there until 1970. I flew as Ray Chalkers Tactical Navigator for a period in VP-69 when he was the C.O. Not only was he a respected Navy Pilot he was also a Warbird Pilot flying a F4F Wildcat at Olympia Airport as I recall. One day visiting the Bob Pond Palm Spring Air Museum I bumped into him working as a Docent. We had a great brief visit talking about WW-II Warbirds. We all missed seeing him at the last two VP-Northwest reunions at Whidbey NAS.

Ray Chalker was a solid squadron mate of mine at Windbey in Patrol Squadron 69 which he commanded in the early 70's. He had a quiet demeanor, but oh my what a great sense of humor, to go with it! My wife, Mimi and I, rented a real beater of a car with the windshield out at a nearby airport one day and drove it into the Chalkers' lovely home to pay a visit. He and Charlotte were in the front room. When they saw us I was sure he would call the cops until we were recognized. We will miss him very much.
