"Auntie B" was like a second mom to me. I was invited to join the Campus Singers in November of 1967 just after my father had passed away. My best friend Dan Martin was already in the group and he encouraged me to audition. The opportunity to share in music and in faith with her and the group was just what I needed to boost my faith in the Lord. We practiced once a week at Auntie's house and usually sang at one of the local churches on Sunday evenings. She brought out the best in us and gave us the opportunity to share our talents and our testimonies to many folks over the years. I really enjoyed the one long trip we'd take in the spring. We went to Oregon, Spokane, Yakima and up north to British Columbia. As the years passed members came and went and each year we were blessed with a slightly different group. I thought about mentioning the names of all the kids I remembered, but then I thought I'd surely mess that up. Lynette was kind enough to include some of her pictures on this website from back during her time in the group. I'm really hoping that some of the kids will be able to attend the memorial on the 28th. It will be fun to share old times and honor Auntie B.
I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of visits with her over the last several years at her facility out on 84th and Portland Avenue. The first time was with Lynette and her husband, Bob. Then about a year ago Dan Martin and I went to visit. I'm so mad at myself for not taking a picture with her at that meeting. The part I will never forget was when Auntie played the song He Touched Me while Dan and I sang a duet. She could still play with the best of them. Dan and I kept planning to get out to see her again but unfortunately we waited too long. She was the same wonderful person and was as sharp as ever when we talked about the Campus Singer Days.
I know she's in a better place and I hope to see her again some day where we can sing and rejoice together again. "Auntie, I'll always remember our times together."
