Phil was seven months older and one year ahead of me in school. His family lived two houses away from mine growing up. A small block with ten houses and nearly all the neighbors were young families moving in at roughly the same time. So lots of the usual childhood memories - playing hide-and-seek, riding bikes, driveway basketball, etc. I recall Phil going boating / fishing with us including one trip to the San Juan islands. If memory serves, the first trip out was near Vashon Island and he caught a salmon while I got skunked. I also recall going camping with his family - at Belfair and/or Dash Point state parks. Many adventures in the neighborhood and beyond. Good memories of playing park-league baseball and a few trips to Cheney Stadium to watch the Tacoma Cubs and maybe the Twins as well. In high school we both ran on the cross-country team and spent many days on the trails at "The Point" and all over town actually. A couple times we went with our coach and another teammate to jog up Mt. Si very early in the morning and BEFORE our regular school day. I'm not sure if we were motivated or just foolish. Phil was a faster runner and usually finished ahead of me. We went to a few HS football games to root for our beloved Rams and I also watched him play in a couple soccer matches.
We lost touch in our adult lives but my hunch is that Phil remained a big kid at heart. He was a good pal and all-around nice guy. My condolences to his family and friends.
