Philip ‘Tony’ Griego, a cherished husband and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Hospital on May 6, 2024 surrounded by his family.
Born in Weston Colorado on May 1, 1942, Tony led a life defined by unwavering dedication to his family and his country. He grew up on a ranch and when he was a child he had a horse named ‘Blue’ which he road bare back. He was a dedicated catholic and served as an altar boy. Tony met his wife Rosalinda Umayam at Fountain Fort Carson High School where they were in two classes together. Rosalinda’s father, Ignacio Umayam, was in the US army stationed at Fort Carson.
Tony served in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served on three different campaigns. Tony was the recipient of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, AF Longevity Service Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award, AF Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign.
During his service in Germany Tony and his wife Rosalinda created the Fil-Am Filipino American Club and registered it on Ramstein Air Force Base. Tony was voted to become president and Rosalinda was the Treasurer where they both ran the club. The association is still active today and serving the Air Force community in Germany.
After retiring from the Air Force, Tony served as a Corrections Officer for the Pierce County Sherriff Department where he worked two shifts. He retired after 22 years. During Tony’s long career in the Air Force and the Sherriff Department he always had two jobs and was dedicated to providing for his family. It would have been Tony and Rosalinda’s 63rd wedding anniversary this year on November 16, 2024.
Tony is survived by his wife Rosalinda Umayam Griego, sister Rosalie Gurule and brother Randy Griego. Tony had 4 children Norma Brewster, Son-In-Law Bill Brewster, Jaime Griego, Daughter-In-Law Shannon Griego, René Cannavan, Son-In-Law Dale Cannavan, Michael Griego, Daughter-In-Law Chanel Griego; 8 grandchildren Ricky, Nathan, Sophia, Isabella, Eliana, Elenor, Shon, Kaeli; 9 great-grand daughters London, Launa, Norma, Mya, Mila, Kathlynn, Zaveya Aria, Braylee; 3 great-grand sons Cloud, Enzio, Levi.
Tony’s legacy is one of dedication, hard work, service to his country, and support and love for his family. Rest in God’s loving care and blessed everlasting life.
