Patricia "Pat" Pansy Addy's Obituary
Patricia “Pat” Pansy Addy was born March 21, 1936 in Pueblo, Colorado to Virgle and Pansy Hockman. She was the youngest of 4 children; always following Virgle, Norma Jean, and William. In 1951 they moved to Tacoma where she attended Stewart Jr. High, then graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954. After graduation she attended Seattle Dental Assistant Training School. She worked a year in Seattle, then got a job in a Tacoma dentist office.
Pat met Jack in April 1955 on the dance floor of the Spanish Castle. After that they were inseparable and married September 2, 1955. They remained inseparable for 58 years. Together they had four children; Jennifer “Jenny”, James “Jim”, Gary and John. There was always a family pet or two in the household. Family was very important and they spent a lot of time with both of their sets of parents, brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. Pat loved them all unconditionally.
Pat supported her children in all their endeavors. As they started school, she became active in the PTA, eventually earning the Golden Acorn Award. She became a Girl Scout leader starting with Brownies and staying with it as the girls became Juniors and then Cadettes. She was also a den mother with the Cub Scouts. She encouraged her children to pursue their interests such as Jenny going away on a student exchange to Mexico, Jim’s interest in classic cars and working on all types of cars, Gary playing drums and performing in various bands as a youth, and John’s free spirit and helping friends in need. Her home was always open to friends and she was “mom” to the whole neighborhood and even welcomed foster son Mark McClain to her family.
Pat had a lot of friends of her own. Not only did she make friends in the neighborhood, PTA and scouting, she also joined a bowling league, Garden Club, Birthday Club, and Women’s Society.
Among her hobbies were baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching, quilting, gardening, and of course, helping others. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Tamera, Ryan, and Wendy Fowler, Julie, Sara and Roslyn Addy and great grandchildren Justin and Colin Gibbs. She enjoyed meeting granddaughter Alex and seeing her great grandson Levi.
Church and her belief in Christ were an important part of her life. As a child she was in the United Brethren Church. About 1962 she joined Bethany United Methodist Church serving at various times as Sunday school teacher, Wedding Hostess, Treasurer, and for nearly 20 years worked at and then ran the Bethany Bounty Food Bank.
In recent years she fought breast cancer, congestive heart failure, stroke, and Alzheimer’s. On May 14, 2014 she lost the battle and went to join her parents and two brothers who preceded her in death. She will be missed by so many people whose lives she touched.
Services will be held Saturday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Memorial Park in the Aspen Chapel. A graveside service and reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Bethany Bounty Food Bank at 5634 South Park, Tacoma, WA 98408 would be welcomed.
