Norma White's Obituary
Norma Jane (Susie) White was born to Harley and Sallie Cherry on December 26, 1916 in Granbury, Texas. After losing her mother to the Spanish influenza epidemic at the age of two, she was raised for a time by her wonderful Aunt Stella. She returned home in her teens to join her five older brothers to sing in their -Å"band- and to work in the local bank. In spite of everything, they were a close family.
All the brothers have predeceased her. Sue passed away the morning of October 8, 2012 and will be so very missed by her family and friends.
In 1938, Sue married our dad, Bruce L. White who was born and raised in Weatherford, Texas, and they moved immediately up to Washington State where he eventually became the fire chief in Lakewood for nearly 30 years. Mom was one of the -Å"call girls-, as the department was all volunteer in the beginning.
Dad passed away in 1974. One daughter, Sharon, passed away in 1984. Sue's oldest granddaughter, Jane, passed in 1982.
Sue is survived by four children, Judy Cross, Jan White (Dale Hodson), Stephen White, and Philip White who were all raised in the Lakewood area. She is also survived by her terrific grandchildren Holly, Roxanne, Philip, Lewis, and Sydney.
Mom loved her family and was always generous and fair with them as well as patient and kind. She liked word games and crossword puzzles and was very good at them, once winning a limerick contest aboard a bus tour around Ireland. She also played the piano beautifully which was very inspirational to her children...meaning they all had to take lessons and practice!
Susie's family would like to offer many thanks to all at Sunshine's Haven for their commitment and care and love.
At Sue's request, there will be a private family service. Any remembrances may be made to the Lakewood Library, where she volunteered once upon a time.
