Nancy A. Schauble's Obituary
Nancy (Dias) Schauble
Nancy Ann Schauble, 69, of Tacoma, Washington died peacefully (just before 7 AM) January 10, 2019, at the Franciscan Hospice House of University Place. She had been battling Stage 4 gall bladder cancer since May.
With her the evening before her death were husband Roger, son Darrell, father Mel, and close friends.
She was born on September 9, 1949 at Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma.
Nancy is inurned, in their family plot in the Rose Gardens area, at Mountain View Memorial Park. She’ll eventually share a maker with husband Roger Schauble. Arrangements are also being made to purchase the last spot in that area for son Darrell Dias, just below Goldie (and eventually Mel) Lewis.
Nancy had been active in numerous Tacoma churches over the years, most recently at Life Center Church. She loved Bible studies, “girl’s nights out,” Oregon beaches, and dining out. She was known by so many for her sweetness, persistence, and kindness.
She also enjoyed making people smile or laugh, giving out compliments, dancing at home with her husband, oldies- and instrumental-music, expressive worship, red and hot pink roses, and staying connected with her friends.
Nancy retired from the Salvation Army Daycare Center as a preschool teacher.
She admittedly pursued Roger Schauble after meeting in a 6-week Bible study, at what was then Pierce County Singles at Life Center Church. He eventually reciprocated by becoming a close friend in 2009. Roger first asked Nancy out on a date in 2010. He proposed to her on Valentine’s Day 2011. They were married July 28, 2012 at Life Center Church in Tacoma.
Nancy is survived by husband Roger Schauble, father James “Mel” Lewis and son Darrell Dias. She is preceded in death by son Eric Brown, brother Jim Lewis, and mother Goldie Lewis.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 PM on March 16th at Skyline Presbyterian Church at 6301 Westgate Blvd. Tacoma, Washington 98406. Pastor Robyn Houge will officiate; former Life Center Associate Pastor Gary Benton assisting.
Parking is limited so carpooling is recommended.
Roger has requested that flowers not be sent.
Contributions may be made in lieu of flowers - in Nancy’s honor - to the Deacon’s fund at Skyline Presbyterian Church, various childhood leukemia organizations, various cancer foundations, ways to support families of very sick loved ones, or one of the two Tacoma Hospice houses.
People wanting to know how they can help are strongly encouraged to assist the ladies of Skyline church with bringing cookies to the reception, after the memorial service.
Roger thanks the exceptionally kind and compassionate staff of Tacoma General’s oncology department, Tacoma General Hospital, and the Franciscan Hospice House in University Place. He would also like to thank Nancy’s many friends, and grade school classmates Nadine Parker and Charlene Ryan Ulguray, who cared for her numerous times through her 8-month struggle with cancer—and sacrificed so much even though most of them were going through their own serious health issues. A special thanks to Cindy Fahlgren, Angela Davis and Jeannie L’Amarca—who were with Nancy for hours at a time during her last few days.
Roger also thanks the people in the building where he has been a custodian: George Russell for his most generous donations, and both the employees of The Russell Family Foundation and the employees of Threshold Advisors Group for numerous gifts in his 8 years as a contracted custodian in the building. A special thank you goes out to Carol Lichtenberg of Threshold Advisors and Joel VanDerPuy of ServiceMaster for making arrangements so he could care for Nancy 3 weeks at home, and another 2 weeks in the hospital and hospice center.
