June Fulikerson
June Fulkerson Passed away peacefully from pneumonia on Thursday, May 17 at the age of 81. She was born on June 29, 1930 and grew up in the Summit area, the only child of Lew and Sara Dillman. June graduated from Puyallup High School in 1948. She attended the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma as a freshman and transferred to Western Washington State College in the fall of 1949.
June met her husband, Russ, while working in the dormitory kitchen. Upon graduation in June 1952 they were married and moved to Tacoma to begin their careers as teachers in the Franklin Pierce School District. June touched the lives of hundreds of elementary school children with her passion for teaching and learning, and retired from the district in 1982. She spent the next ten years teaching elementary school mathematics methods and supervising student teachers at PLU.
Upon full retirement, June and Russ led active lives that included world travel, time with family and friends, trips to Mt. Rainier, and volunteer work. She was especially involved in Celebrate Seniority, F.I.S.H. Food Bank, and United Methodist Women.
June was preceded in death by her daughter Julene Wallis.
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 60 years, her daughters Ruth Anderson and Susan Fortin and their husbands Burr and Marty, her son-in-law Jim Wallis, and her grandchildren Kyle Wallis and Kate Fortin.
June began attending Summit United Methodist Church at the age of three and was a lifetime member. A service in celebration of her life will be held there at 1:00 on Friday, May 25, 2012. She requested that any memorials be made to the Summit UMC Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice .
