Milton Werner Gaschk's Obituary
MILTON GASCHK Lt. Commander Milton Gaschk, a pioneer in Naval Crytography, died February 23, 2008 at the age of 98. He married Julia Sather in May 1933 who preceded him in death in September 2001. He was born in North Dakota and grew up in Washington State. Milton joined the U.S. Navy in 1927 and between 1928 and 1943, duty stations included the USS Blackhawk, USS Paul Jones and USS Stewart Asiatic Fleet. U.S. Naval Radio Material and Operating School, PI., USS Saratoga, Lexington, Langley, Ranger, Yorktown and Enterprise in the U.S. and Hawaiian waters and the U.S. Naval Security Station, WA D.C. In December 1943, he was commissioned Ensign and was stationed in Bletchley Park, British cryptology head quarters, as assistant U.S. Navy Liaison Officer, in the famous hut 6, the German Naval cryptographic section. After World War II he was a cryptologic intelligence officer, stationed throughout the world including the U.S. Naval Center for Cryptology on Nebraska Ave., in Washington D.C. Later he served as a department head at the Armed Forces Security Agency in Arlington, Virginia, and at the National Security Agency following its creation. After his Naval retirement in January 1958, he worked as a contract cryptologic officer in Bremerhaven, Germany. After this employment, and as Master Gardener, he made use of his extensive knowledge of plants and flowers collected in his travels, and he was involved with the Seattle Arboretum, now known as the Washington Park Arboretum. Born the first of ten children, Milton is survived by two sisters and two brothers. In respect of Milton's wishes there will be no funeral or memorial. His ashes will be laid to rest alongside those of his wife, in Arlington National Cemetery Arlington, Virginia. Arrangements by Mt. View Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
