Mildred Boyd's Obituary
Mildred May Brown Boyd
Mildred May Brown Boyd passed away on Oct. 5, 2015 at the age of 99 years in Shoreline, WA. She was born in Tacoma, WA. to Alpharetta and Harry Brown (the original candy maker and founder of Brown and Haley Candy) on May 4, 1916. She attended Stadium High School, and graduated from the College of Puget Sound in 1938. While teaching Home Economics and drama at Montesano High School, she met her future husband, Gene Boyd. They married in 1942, just before Gene reported for duty in the US Army. They spent the first few years of their marriage at several Army basses throughout the US.
In 1950, the now family of five moved to Seattle and spent over 20 years enjoying their home on Haller Lake. Mildred hosted many gatherings of family, friends and church groups. She participated in several civic and community activities such as Children’s Orthopedic Guild, Haller Lake School PTA and a garden club as well as active membership at Haller Lake Methodist Church.
In midlife, Mildred became an avid golfer, and spent many fun times at Jackson Park Golf Club with a dear friend. Gene and Mildred retired to Alderbrook Golf Club where they had a home built on the 17th fairway. Mildred was club champion for several years and had the thrill of hitting 2 hole in ones! They enjoyed a wonderful community for over 20 years playing golf, bridge and tending their garden. They were also very involved at the Shelton United Methodist Church.
Over the years Mildred and Gene hosted many foreign exchange students whose friendships endured for years. They enjoyed many wonderful travel experiences all over the US and world.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Gene, after 60 years of marriage. She is survived by her three children, Jerry Boyd (Patti) of Spokane, Janet Delmore (Ned) of Seattle, and Bob Boyd (Julie) of Lynwood, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, brothers Alvin Brown of Seattle and Dick Brown of Tacoma. She is also survived by our dear adoptive family, Carmen and Nelson Earhart of Miami, Fl.
Our mom will be remembered for her enduring love of God and her steadfast faith. She witnessed to all how to live a life of service to others. Her greatest blessing was her family, which she took great joy in gathering together.
Our family is very grateful to the staff at Welcome Home Adult Family Home in Shoreline where she received such loving care for the past 6 years of her life.
A Memorial Service will be held at Edmonds United Methodist Church on Nov. 1st at 2:30 in the afternoon.
