Michael William Hazen's Obituary
Michael William Hazen, age 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went to be with our Lord on April 20, 2021. He was one of 8 children and the seventh boy, born to Andrew and Marie Hazen on July 21, 1932 in Tacoma, WA. “Mike,” as he was known to his family and friends, graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School in 1950.
In 1951, Mike began a 3-year apprenticeship in the Meat Cutter trade and attended Tacoma Vocational School for a two-year program. In 1957, Mike was drafted in the US Army. He served 2 years of active duty and 3 years of active reserve before being honorably discharged in December 1962. After his military service, Mike returned to Tacoma and resumed his career as a Meat Cutter. For many years he was self-employed, operating Clover Park Meats and continued in the trade until retirement in 1996.
In 1966, Mike met and married the love of his life, Inge. Inge was visiting friends in Tacoma from her homeland of Germany when she met Mike. The two fell in love and were married for 54 years.
Mike’s greatest joys were his family and spending time with his wife Inge. He and Inge traveled many times to Germany to visit family, including their daughter Betty. Mike loved the outdoors and could often be found in his garden. He also enjoyed many fishing trips in Washington, Montana, and Canada. Mike was also an accomplished self-taught auto mechanic.
Mike was predeceased by his loving wife Inge; son Michael and daughter Christine from his previous marriage; parents Andrew and Marie Hazen; brothers Arthur, Joseph, James, Andrew, John and Edward Hazen.
He is survived by his sister, Rose Marie Treanton (Robert) of Packwood, WA; daughter Betty Ehmann (Stefan) of Berlin, Germany; and Rosslyn Stookey (Steve) of Kirkland, WA; 4 grandchildren, Dawn, Sol, Jack and Ava; and great granddaughter Samantha.
Mike was known to all as an exceptionally kind and wonderful man. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.
A Rosary Prayer Service and Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday April 29, 2021 at Visitation Catholic Church in Tacoma, WA. Rosary Prayer Service will begin at 10:30am followed by mass at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
