She was an active member of the Tacoma Area Urban League. In 1978 Essey was awarded Â"Social Worker of the YearÂ" in Washington because of her outstanding contributions and record of service. After retiring in 1975, Essey continued working as an advocate for people in crisis and those with special needs. She was well known for her long-term volunteer community work in numerous social-service organizations in the Tacoma area. Essey loved life and all that it offered her. A service in celebration of Essey will take place at Mountain View (4100 Steilacoom Blvd, Lakewood) in the Garden Chapel on Thursday, June 8th at 3pm.
