Mayselle A. Gotchy's Obituary
Mayselle Gotchy passed away peacefully at the age of 100 years on the afternoon of March 29, 2017 with her daughter and niece by her side. Mayselle Amelia (Olafson) Gotchy was born on April 20, 1916 in Litchville North Dakota to Arnold and Irene Olafson. Mace had one sister and four brothers whom she loved very much. She was the last surviving sibling. North Dakota was her home until she married Wayne Gotchy in June of 1935 and the happy couple moved to Eatonville, WA. In 1946, after a few moves, the Gotchy family settled in University Place.
Involvement in Tyler Chapter O.E.S. and the Lady Fireman Auxiliary was very important to Mace and she was active in both for many years. In the late 70's camping with Good Sam and Holiday Ramblers became a source of fun as well as service. These clubs took them on many adventures. Mace was also dedicated to her family and never missed a chance to spend time with her children, and her three generations of grandchildren. Mace and Wayne were proud and supportive of their family and happily cared for grandchildren, and attended many ball games, awards ceremonies, and concerts.
Working in retail most of her life, Mace truly enjoyed her years as a grocery checker. Her first (and favorite) grocery job was with Thomas Brothers Foodliner which later sold to Albertsons. Mace continued to worked for Albertsons and before retiring worked for Park and Shop on Bridgeport. She was a hard worker and had a knack for getting to know her customers and by the time she retired it seemed she knew nearly everyone in University Place.
Mace was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Wayne Gotchy, and her son-in-law Richard Sagers. She is survived by her daughter Patsy Sagers and her son Michael Gotchy (Carol Foster), her grandchildren Mitch Sagers (Caryl), Heidi Oberst (Doug), and Thaine Filkins (Sharon) as well as her great-grandchildren Geoffrey Sagers (Jill), Alyssa Sagers, Seth Oberst, Hannah Filkins, Luke Filkins and Lilly Filkins. Mace was blessed with her great-great granddaughter, Madison Sagers and big sister Brooklyn, as well as multiple generations of nieces and nephews.
Heartfelt thanks go to the owners and caregivers at Grand Care Home for the outstanding care and kindness provided to our loved one. Your attentiveness and support are greatly appreciated. Thank you for loving Mace and providing her such a wonderful home.
Mace was loved by many and will be deeply missed by her family and her friends. We are grateful for the many cherished memories that will comfort us in the years to come. She will never be forgotten. A memorial service and reception will be held on Sunday April 23rd at 3:00 PM at University Place Presbyterian Church (253-564-2522). Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Mace's memory to West Pierce C.A.R.E.S., at 3631 Drexler Dr. West, University Place, WA, 98466.
