Marylu Wallerich's Obituary
Marylu Ann Wallerich (nee |Oakland) passed away peacefully October 16, 2023, in Tacoma, WA.
She was born in 1931 in Mount Vernon WA. Marylu attended Whitman College for one year before
transferring to the University of Washington where she was a music major and member of Alpha Chi
Omega sorority. While attending UW she met the love of her life Peter Wallerich. They married in 1954
in Williamsburg VA where Peter was stationed with the US Army. They celebrated 62 years of
marriage before Peter’s passing in 2017.
Marylu was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Lakewood WA. She was an active
member of WOSM (Women of St. Mary’s) and taught summer vacation Bible school.
A gifted pianist she and friend Connie Bacon performed “two hands-four piano” at their annual Gift of
Music gathering and was invited to play for former WA state Governor Booth Gardner.
Her love of fashion led her to open an upscale clothing store-Lulu-in South Tacoma.
Marylu was a member of Daughters of Norway, the Tacoma Garden Club, Junior League,Aloha, and
the Tacoma Golf and Country Club.
Marylu is survived by her four daughters Karen Wallerich (Tom Tieche);Kristen Wallerich; Karla (Scott
Winship) Kaari Wallerich, and grandchildren Ailsa, Peter, and Signe Wallerich-Neils; Jens Winship
(Maddie) ; and Joel Winship.
