Maryjean West's Obituary
Maryjean (Mary) West
Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Mary was born at home in Tacoma on May 13, 1920. She passed away peacefully with family by her side on October 31, 2008. She was raised in Tacoma, and graduated with honors from Lincoln High School in 1937. Mary and Edwin West, the love of her life, spent their married life of 67 years in Tacoma and Lakewood. Mary loved to entertain and cook for family and friends at their summer home in Tahuya on Hood Canal. Ed and Mary enjoyed owning and racing thoroughbred horses at Longacres and other west coast race tracks for over 20 years. All animals held a special place in Mary's heart. Mary enjoyed swimming, golfing, bowling, all card games, having lunch with her birthday group, and playing bridge with her longtime friends at the Elk's Club. Mary shared her musical talent by playing the organ for the veterans at the V.A. Hospital. Mary volunteered for over 40 years at Madigan, Lakewood, and St. Clare Hospitals, and also supported many charitable programs. Mary is survived by her husband Edwin West, daughter Judy Mickel (Tom), son David West (Gayle), sister Jane Waugh, grandchildren Stephanie, Michelle, Tommy, Jaime, Cody and 13 great-grandchildren. In memory of Mary you may make a donation to the Humane Society of Tacoma Pierce County or a charity of your choice. A private family memorial service will be held to celebrate Mary's life. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital for their caring and thoughtfulness.
