Mary Ellen Zevenbergen Sand
Mary Ellen Zevenbergen Sand passed away on June 9, 2016 at the Franciscan Hospice in University Place. Always a teacher and a student, Mary Ellen graduated from Lincoln High School and the University of Puget Sound (UPS) with honors. She taught first grade at Edison, Washington and Hoyt primary school. She loved her students. She was active in needlepoint groups EGA and ANG. She had the honor to be asked to create and design a Christmas ornament from the “Nutcracker” ballet for the Clinton White House Blue Room tree. She was awarded Grand Champion of Hardanger 2012 at the Puyallup fair. She retired from teaching in 1983 after 30 years of service as secretary (13 years) and teacher (17 years). She is a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fircrest. She was married to her husband, T. Warren Sand for 51 years. She was preceeded in death by her husband, T Warren Sand, Mother, Bertha M. Zevenbergen-Rice, and Father, Neal Zevenbergen. She is survived by her sister, Betty L. Lane, Niece Debra L. Hallock, Nephews Michael L. Lane, Matthew L. Lane and Marc L. Lane. Services will be held Saturday June 18, 2016 at 10:00am at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, WA. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital or Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fircrest.
