He was a major factor in my life, when I was set to quit college and admit defeat, he told me how he didn't think he had the ability to continue with gamma ray research for the navy, and he stepped back and came up thru the teaching system at UPS.

What I got was a sense that I wasn't a failure, even if I did step out of the program, and that I would find a path that would work. I transferred up to UW and finished with high marks. He let me know that it I wasn't a failure if I didn't make my first choice, because I could excel at something just as important.

I wrote to him in 1980, showing him my report card, which he was proud of. I didn't need a kick in the ass, I needed someone with compassion and understanding, telling me to keep working on whatever I chose.

Karen, I just saw the piece about your father's passing in Arches Magazine. I didn't know how else to get ahold of you so I will leave a message here. Your father was a wonderful man and professor and your mother was one of my favorites of all my friends' moms. I am sorry they are gone. I hope you are well. Martin Nelson was my physics professor when I attended University of Puget Sound in the late 1970's. He was a marvel, gracious beyond words. I could easily add many more superlatives to describe him, and I consider myself blessed to be one of his students.

Dr. Nelson was my adviser at UPS. I'll always remember him as a gentle,wise, kind man. He left a wonderful legacy with all the lives he touched at UPS. My condolences to his family.

We so enjoyed knowing both M and Martin at Redeemer Church. They were such an example of true love and devotion to each other. They bought grapes from us for several years. It was a delight visiting with them and sharing the joy of gardening. My husband, Gary and I visited Martin at the TLH and when he would forget our names the past years we would start talking grapes. That would spark a memory and we would then become, "The Grape People."
We will miss our dear friend, but rejoice that he is now happy and with his soulmate.

My name is Terry Nelson, my dad was Lawrence J. Nelson, (a cousin of Martins).
So sorry to read about your dad's passing. Martin and "M" were very enjoyable and we always enjoyed our time with them. My wife (Judy) and I Just stopped by to visit Martin just last month. Not sure he recognized us , but talked up a storm anyway.

I new Mr. Martin for only a short time. He was always so very so sweet and pleasant to me. I had my job for a short while when I first met Mr. Martin. He will be missed so much.

Martin was a "bright presence" at Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community for many years. He warmly welcomed me when I became Chaplain in 2011, and I would joke with him about his being "the world's oldest paperboy," because he diligently delivered the morning paper to the first floor apartment residents for many years. In these last months, he was in the morning Chapel service just about every day, and always expressed his appreciation. We will all miss Martin!
