Martha Anne Kuehl Schroeder's Obituary
Martha Anne Kuehl Schroeder of Tacoma passed away on July 9, 2017 due to complications from recent illnesses. Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 3, 1932 to Albert John Frederick Kuehl and Rozena Anna Morris Kuehl. The family soon moved to Southern California where her brothers, Albert Kuehl Jr. (1935 – 1984) and George Kuehl (b 1938) completed the family.
Martha graduated from Escondido High School and attended Fresno State University.
Devoted wife of Arlo H. Schroeder (1929-2011) they enjoyed 59 years of marriage.
Martha is survived by her brother George and her children Karen Helene Fischer, Kirk Milton Schroeder, Carol Rozanne McDaniel and Cathryn Lee Hammond, 10 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.
A resident of Tacoma for 44 years, Martha was employed by Northwest Pipe and Steel Company for 18 ½ years before retiring in 1992. A tireless and devoted volunteer and caregiver she spent many years working with the Tacoma Area Literacy Council including 4 years as president, supported Arlo in his Kiwanis work, directed the Zion Lutheran Church choir, and assisted many individuals as a personal caregiver, advocate and transporter. Upon moving to the Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community in 2012 she became involved in the preparation for emergencies and disasters program and became PC-Net coordinator for the community.
For her volunteer work in the community, Martha received several recognitions and awards including: The President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, The City of Tacoma City of Destiny Award in recognition of outstanding service to the community, The Daughters of the American Revolution Award for excellence in community service, and The Outstanding Adult Award from The Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community for her work in Emergency Management.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church Tacoma, WA on Saturday July 22, 2017 at 2 PM. All friends and family are invited.
