Marie Patricia Johnson's Obituary
Marie Patricia Johnson (Pat) Sory2/19/1923 Â- 6/8/2004Born in New Orleans, LA, Pat was raised in Bryan, TX, the eldest of five sisters. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1939, having won the State Typing Championship of Texas her Junior year. In 1942, she married Carl Gerlach Sory, Captain, U.S. Army. As an Army wife, she made homes in many areas of the United States and in Germany and Thailand, taking advantage of these postings to travel throughout Europe and the Far East. As the wife of the Ft. Lewis Post Engineer in the mid-1960s, she served in many organizations on post and was awarded a Community Service Award for her Â"outstanding and unselfish contribution to the welfare of Fort LewisÂ" in 1967. That year, Pat and Carl settled in Lakewood, after he retired from the Army. She was a lifelong avid bridge player and achieved the level of Life Master. She died from complications brought on by bulbar-onset ALS, a debilitating disease which she endured with humor and dignity for over two years.Pat was predeceased by her husband, her son, Osborn Johnson Sory, and three of her sisters, Suzanne Johnson Kirkpatrick (Sue), Janet Johnson Schoeffler, and Mary Osborn Johnson Carroll (Coocy). She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Louise Sory, her youngest sister, Roberta Johnson Lloyd (Punkin), numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Greg Carter and the wonderful staff at the MDA Clinic at Provident/St Peter Hospital in Olympia, and the outstanding team from Franciscan Hospice for their loving care. There will be a Memorial Mass in her name at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 24, at St John Bosco in Tacoma. There will be a reception to celebrate her life at the Tacoma Golf & Country Club that afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Muscular Dystrophy Association or Franciscan Hospice, 1717 S. J Street, Tacoma, 98405.
