Marie Nathalie Bamford's Obituary
Marie Nathalie Bamford passed away peacefully early Saturday morning January 23, 2010. Marie Nathalie Sorg was born on October 27, 1914 in Dryad, Washington, which was her childhood home. Her parents, Henry and Anna Sorg, raised Marie and 7 other siblings. Marie graduated from Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1936. She married Calvin D. Bamford on June 15, 1940, and raised 3 children in Tacoma. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends, boating on the South Sound and in the San Juan Islands, and spending time with family at their beachhouse at Minter on Key Peninsula. Marie pursued a variety of interests and participated in a number of groups over her lifetime, including Tacoma Yacht Club, a garden club, Tacoma Orthopedic Association, Fircrest Golf Club, a women's bowling league, and an investment club. After the death of her husband in 1975, Marie spent time with her extended family yet also traveled independently to places around the world such as Egypt, Asia, Europe and Australia. She owned an antique store in Ruston and always enjoyed perusing antique and thrift stores for "finds." Marie also enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors, beachcombing for unusual driftwood and shells, digging clams and encouraging her grandchildren to wade in the Puget Sound waters. She shared with her family her eclectic tastes in music, sports, and reading material, and talents in the kitchen which ranged from roast leg of lamb to flaky pie crust to Thanksgiving parsley dressing.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Calvin, her parents and her 7 siblings. She is survived by her children, Kathryn Bamford, Calvin (Joanne) Bamford, and Barbara Bamford (John Erickson), along with 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. "Mimi" will be fondly remembered for her generosity, caring for others and dedication to her family.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 30th at 1:30 p.m. at St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal Church, 3615 N. Gove St, Tacoma. A reception will follow the service. Many thanks to Marie's wonderful caregivers at Family First and Franciscan Hospice. If you wish to make a charitable contribution in memory of Marie, we suggest Franciscan Hospice.
