Marie Frances Corey's Obituary
Life-long Tacoma resident Marie Trutman Corey passed away peacefully at Tacoma General Hospital on Friday, January 21, 2011. Marie was 87. Born at the same hospital on Nov. 10, 1923, Marie grew up in South Tacoma, graduated from Lincoln High, then began a civilian career at Ft. Lewis. Early in her years at Ft. Lewis, Marie met Murray Corey, and they were married. The couple had two daughters, Judy and Susy. Marie returned to work after the birth of her second daughter. Both Marie and Murray modeled hard work and community involvement to their daughters. After retiring from Civil Service, Marie began a 20 year commitment as a volunteer with the Lutheran-sponsored "Meals on Wheels." Three days a week Marie opened the Meals on Wheels office by 6 a.m., taking phone queries and orders for weekly deliveries. Marie loved both her jobs - at Ft. Lewis and "Meals on Wheels" - because she enjoyed being part of a fun team making a difference. Her greatest joys were her daughters Judy and Susy, and her grandkids Riley Morton (Seattle) and Giovanni and Taylor Favaro (both Phoenix). All holidays were causes for big celebrations, with home-cooked dinners, surprises, and presents. Marie's other delights included her beloved North End neighbors Alice and Jim Bennett, her sister-in-law Dot Miller, and her fun getaways with her husband Murray, her daughters, or Dot to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Phoenix, Leavenworth, or to any Nordstrom. Marie will be missed for her optimistic spirit, unconditional acceptance, ability to go with the flow, and her willingness to laugh at all that life handed her. Remembrance donations only should be directed to Meals on Wheels-Lutheran Community Services in Tacoma, 223 North Yakima Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98403. A celebration of Marie's life will occur on Saturday, February 19th, 2011 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 6730 North 17th near Pearl Street in Tacoma at 11 a.m.
