Manfred Horst Paul Hoberg's Obituary
Surrounded by family, Manfred passed away peacefully August 16 2017. He was proud to be 90 years old.
He was born in Berlin Germany on December 11, 1926 to Paul Hoberg and Margaret Hedt. He had one older brother, Kurt. Growing up in the city he attended school and got into plenty of mischief with his friends. He enjoyed ice skating and competing on a hockey team. While attending trade school, he was trained as a department store window designer.
But soon life changed with the war. He was drafted into the German navy. With the help of a family friend he was able to avoid serving under this branch and proceeded to serve in a Horse Artillery in France. There he was in charge of caring for the horses and equipment. Miraculously he survived many battles and was eventually captured and held in an American prison camp. There he learned his first American swear words and to his wife’s dismay, he has been using them ever since. He was safely released in 1945. However he lost his father and brother during the war.
To support his mother and himself, he took many odd jobs. Eventually he worked in a British hotel as a doorman. He worked many nights but he still had time to party. There he met his true love, Christel. They began dating and 3 years later they were married.
In 1957, Manfred and Christel crossed the Atlantic ocean to their new home in America. They docked in New York. From there they took a Greyhound bus to Puyallup. For a short time they live with aunt Ursula and uncle Kurt who had previously immigrated to the states. A generous couple, the Gregorys, offered their guesthouse to make their first home. Manfred was soon employed by Fors Farms Poultry Hatchery. He started by cleaning barns with a horse and cart. Eventually he moved up to head supervisor. He made many lifetime friendships there. He retired after 37 years.
Manfred and Christel had 3 children. Peggy(David), Peter(Debi) and Marc(Holly). They have 8 grand children, Jessica, Darren, Austin, Erich (Rea), Chelsey, Travis, Hunter and Kurtis.
Manfred, Dad, Opa was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
