Mabel Irene (Ramey) Weiss died on August 7, 2011 in Kirkland, WA after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mabel was born at home on Ferry Street in Tacoma, WA on March 18, 1923 to Alma and Edwin Ramey. She was a loving sister to brother, H. Edwin (Ed), and step-siblings, Leroy, Eugene, and Hazel. Mabel attended Bryant Elementary, Jason Lee Junior High, and graduated with academic honors from Stadium High School (class of '40). Mabel married Robert Cooper Weiss on June 14, 1946. Mabel had four children; Sally Harkness, Peggy Ketterer (Roy), Robert Weiss (Colleen), and Jane Weiss, and four grandchildren, Sarah Ketterer Whitford, Veronika, Cooper, and Jackson Weiss. Mabel loved business and working. From 19491969, she was an independent property and casualty insurance agent. She was the office manager for the Elks Club in Tacoma as well. Mabel was always involved in her children's' lives. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a PTA President at Mont Downing Elementary, and a recipient of the PTA Golden Acorn Award. In 1969, the Weiss family moved to Mercer Island, and then to Sammamish in 1985. Mabel retired in 1988 as the Vice-President and Risk Manager for Seattle First National Bank, which had by then become Bank of America. She had been with the bank for nearly 20 years. In 1974, she became a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter. Mabel was a Past President of the Washington Chapter of Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) in 1974 & 1975, and she served as a member of the National Board of Directors of RIMS in 1979-1980. Mabel enjoyed traveling to many conventions and conferences all across the US and Canada. Mabel loved her home and her garden in Sammamish and was a master gardener. She volunteered for several years after her retirement as a concierge at Virginia Mason Hospital. Throughout her 88 years, Mabel spent countless hours enjoying her family and friends and traveling. She will be deeply missed. Two daughters survive Mabel, Sally and Jane, her son, Robert, and her four grandchildren, along with many dedicated and cherished friends, e specially Beryl, Shirley, and Elaine. Her husband, Robert and daughter, Peggy, preceded Mabel in death. A special thank you goes to Mabel's cherished 'buddy', Evelyn Hudson and to all her Caregivers in the LN at Aegis Lodge in Kirkland. She will always be "Sweetest Mabel"! A celebration of Mabel's life will be held on Thursday, August 11th at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden Chapel at Mountain View Memorial Park, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd SW, Lakewood, Washington. 98499 Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
