I grew up at Christ Lutheran Church and Luella was such a wonderful example of a woman of faith. She was a constant presence in my childhood. When I graduated from high school, Luella was the quilter who held my senior quilt and wrapped me up in it in the front of the church. I will always remember her smiling face and warm wishes in that moment. I live on the East Coast now, and my daughter's best friend, who she met at church, is named Luella. It always makes me glad to think that my daughter has a special Luella in her life and in her family of faith, as I did with Luella Johnson. She is making heaven an even brighter and more wonderful place, I am sure.

Mrs. Johnson was a teacher that once you had the privilege of having her- you never forgot. I am reminded of a surprise wedding anniversary my wife put together, several years ago, which was a night at Thornwood mansion. The next morning I said let's walk the grounds, and I mentioned that I believed my kindergarten teacher once lived in Thornwood. To my surprise she still did. We walked up to door and knocked, not knowing what to expect, and there she was. We had a delightful chat. Her mind was very sharp and she reminded me of things I had long since forgotten. But one thing I will never forget is-her. She gave many of us our starts in the right direction!

Miss Louella! She was the most fun and I liked school from Day One because of her! When I ended up running my mother's restaurant, Gerties, she would still come by now and then or at least call every so often and talk about the milkshakes she loved. And how she wanted one last reunion of all her kids and perhaps we could do that at Gerties. But we never got around to it. One of my fondest memories was much later in life when I ran into her at the Lowe's store where she would drop her husband Art for a while so he could "happily wander around and look at everything'. She had an amazing sense of humor and love of life. One of a kind!! She was - and is - much loved.

My beautiful kindergarten teacher, Miss Luella, who had excitement in her voice that caused us all to grin in anticipation. She set the bar for excellence in teaching and not one other teacher, at least not in my experience, came close. I kept in touch with her all of my life - am now 65 - and will look forward to sitting again at her knees in Heaven, where she, no doubt, will read from a giant storybook full of fantastic illustrations. I love you, Miss Luella.

On my first day of Kindergarten I turned around and walked back home.

Maybe if I’d have gotten that first hug from her like all the other five-year-olds entering those scary halls of learning at Tillicum Elementary School I’d have stayed but she never got the opportunity.

She’d get her chance though.

When I fell off the slide during Kindergarten recess and broke my collarbone she was there and I got that squeeze. Gently. And she dried my tears.

Mrs. Johnson was my kindergarten teacher at Tillicum in 1952, She was the best teacher I ever had. When my class graduated high school she invited all the classmates (from kindergarten) to come to her home to celebrate. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Heaven has received an angel.

Luella made the best cinnamon twists I have ever had.They where so popular and she would bake so many that living right next door on Portland was great because she used our oven also. We reaped the benefits. I'm sure I've got a hundred memories of our growing up life's next door to the Johnson's. Love you

So sorry for your loss, it is also a loss for me personally as LaLa and your Dad where two of the most Loving, caring,wonderful people I ever on this earth. I can not convey how much your mother influenced my life and countless others. It is comforting to know that she watches over us all today. God Bless you and your family's.
