Lisa S Young's Obituary
Lisa Young (57) of Seattle died peacefully at her home on January 24, 2014, after a valiant battle with cancer. Lisa Stephanie Young was born on January 18, 1957, in Massapequa, NY, the daughter of John Sacia Young and Rita S. Fay Young.
At an early age Lisa exhibited exceptional artistic and creative talents. After graduating from Massapequa High School, she received her BA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She worked as a graphic artist for several years in Manhattan before moving to Seattle in 1988.
In Seattle Lisa became a small business owner when she founded Flopping Fish Productions. She came up with the name when she said that after leaving New York she “felt like a fish out of water.” For the next 18 years she became known for distinctive designs etched into metal to create elegant decorative hardware and home accessories. When Lisa set out to apply her highly-praised and unique aesthetic to the world of jewelry, she launched her second small business, Nixie Ware—designing pendants with original intricate designs etched into high quality stainless steel, hand polished to a satin luster. She chose the name Nixie, meaning "water spirit", as a nod to the aquatic nature of the Flopping Fish name.
Lisa was always an advocate for natural foods and a healthy lifestyle, with moral integrity for environmental sustainability. She was an avid book reader, New York Times loyalist, hiker, cyclist, and a skilled rock climber.
Lisa was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother Rita Young and her brother John Young, both of Roseville, CA; her sister Sacia and husband Neil (Kai) Vik of Kent, WA; her half-brother Timothy (Ty) Young of Jackson Hole, WY; several nieces and a nephew; one great-niece; and by many loyal friends.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to either the Providence Hospice Foundation (http://washington.providence.org/in-home-services/hospice-of-seattle/donate-and-volunteer/ ) or the Marsha Rivkin Organization for Ovarian Cancer Research (http://www.marsharivkin.org/).
A memorial service and reception is scheduled at Mountain View Funeral Home on Sunday, February 16, at 2:00 PM in the Celebration of Life Center.
