Lewis A. Overbo's Obituary
Lewis “Lou” Alvin Overbo was born January 17, 1942, in Tacoma, Washington to Elsie Kettlewell (North Dakota) and Lars Overbo (Gaupne, Norway). Lou graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. After high school, he joined the United States Navy for three years and served on the (DD 446) Radford, which saw him sail to Hawaii, Philippines and Japan. When he returned home, he married Barbara Edwards and the couple had two sons, Scott and David.
Lou later graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a bachelor's degree in business and marketing. He worked at the St. Regis paper mill, but most of his career was with Washington National Gas as a sales manager. During his time at WNG, he won several sales awards rewarding him trips to Hong Kong, the Bahamas, Mexico and Puerto Rico. In the 1990s, he left the company to work as a wholesale sporting goods salesman for Baden Sports.
He moved to Des Moines and married Linda Fernando in 1978. They had two daughters, Lori and Lisa. In 2007, he and Linda relocated from Des Moines to NE Tacoma, bringing them closer to his sister Aggie and brother-in-law, Joe Cozine. Throughout the years, the Overbo and Cozine families often traveled, celebrated holidays as well as Friday night happy hours together as often as possible.
Lou was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Washington and served on four mission trips to Haiti and one to Jamaica. These experiences profoundly influenced his outlook on life and strengthened his relationship with the Lord and Savior.
When Lou was younger, he participated in his favorite sports, which included basketball, golf, bowling, and baseball. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, including a group of childhood buddies from Tacoma. He loved fishing and being outdoors, especially on the water. He coached his sons' basketball and baseball teams, and he was fond of watching his daughters play soccer and perform on the high school drill team.
After a lengthy battle with diabetes, Lou passed away on May 25, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents Elsie and Lars Overbo. He is survived by wife Linda Overbo, sons Scott and David (Ruth) Overbo, daughters Lori (Ryan) Rygmyr, Lisa (Jared) Hansen, sister Agnes (Joseph) Cozine, and brother-in-law Larry Fernando. Lou had three grandchildren: Jordan Overbo, Brody and Cooper Hansen.
The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who have given Lou excellent care over the years, as well as family, friends, neighbors, golf community, Grace Lutheran Church, the staff at DaVita and Garden Terrace. During this difficult time, we appreciate the many thoughtful cards, flowers, and expressions of sympathy that you have sent. Lou will be remembered for his love for life, sense of humor, and commitment to his friends and family. His legacy will live on through the memories of those who knew him best.
