Lena Mayers' Obituary
Lena Mayers entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 25, 2006.A family friend once described her as: "She was a bright and shining star in a dark and murky sky."Born in Trenton, Mississippi, of Choctaw Indian and Creole descent, Lena was the daughter of Charles and Lilla Noblin. She attended Jackson State University adn Pierce College, majoring in Education. Her love of teaching and concern for the welfare of children were lifelong passions. She married Sidney Mayers on August 23, 1952 and was the consummate "Military Wife." Some of the highlights of their "postings" in Germany (Mannheim, Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern) included traveling extensively throughout Europe (including visits to Russia and Czechoslovakia) and Volksmarching.Her voluntary service to church and community over several decades was extensive. Positions held include: Sunday School Teacher, Girl Scout Leader, Director of Religious Education, PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) President, Outreach Coordinator, and Children's Counselor and Choir Member (Billy Graham Crusades in the Pacific Northwest). She was gifted by God with a lovely soprano voice and was a member of numerous church choirs and praise teams over the course of her lifetime.Lena loved gardening, cats, "doing the Puyallup," interior decorating, camping, train travel, reading, attending live theater and the ballet, feeding wildlife, and Christmas. Her beautiful smile and infectious laugh, her joie de vivre, her kindness, her selfless generosity, her charm, her wisdom, her compassion, her absolutely wonderful sense of humor, and her deep and abiding faith in Christ will be forever remembered by those who were blessed enough to have known her.She will truly be "forever in our hearts."Lena is survived by her husband, Sidney, daughter Deborah (Ray) Denison, siblings Bobbie (Ross) Coleman, Jr., Annie Harper, L.C. (Clemme) Noblin, Artis (Myrtle) Noblin, Jerry (Lucille) Noblin, Charlie (Roma) Noblin, Charlie D. (Eloise) White, and numerous relatives and friends.Please send donations to Lena's memory to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 in the Mountain View Valley Chapel. Following the services, a reception will be held at the Ft. Lewis Main Post Chapel Auditorium.
