Kuong Pung's Obituary
Kuong Pung, 82, passed into eternal rest on the evening of October 20, 2020 at the hospital. He was born in Battambang, Cambodia on January 23, 1938 to Pung Yip (father) & Lorn Phoeuk (mother). He was the fifth of 9 children.
Kuong is survived by his 2nd eldest sibling/sister, Lang Yip. He will be lovingly remembered by his true best friend of 52 years, Hach (72) blessed with 8 children, 5 living along with their spouses/S.O & children. Eldest daughter, Sovanna (Tum); son, Poch (deceased); daughter, Eth (deceased); son, Veasna; Holly (husband, Stephen); Sophia (husband, Darryl II); Nary (Steve); youngest son, Peter (deceased). He will be fondly remembered by his 5 beautiful grandchildren; Aalex (Sovanna), Vivykha (Veasna), Penelope & Russell (Holly) & Darryl III, aka Trey (Sophia). Also, his cousins, nieces & nephews as well.
Kuong is predeceased by his parents, his 7 siblings (listed from eldest to youngest; #1 Jeung/brother, #3 Sung/brother, #4 Mun/brother, #6 Hoeung/sister, #7 Hau/bro, #8 Chi/brother, #9 Heouk/brother); and 3 of his children- Poch (son, age 2), Eth (daughter, age 3 month baby) & Peter (son, age 18); also the family dog of 12 years, Koko. While in Cambodia, he lost his father and two of his eldest siblings due to an illness that they suffered. Later, during the Cambodian genocide in 1975-1979. He lost two of his children due to an illness/malnutrition, his mother, and four of his siblings- Mun, Hau, Chi & Heouk were taken away by the Khmer Rouge. Only 2 of his sisters, including himself survived but later lost his youngest sister to cancer in 2006.
Kuong lived a humble life, with a grateful heart. A true survivor of the Cambodian genocide. Before the genocide, he worked at the Cambodian-Thai border in Customs and Border Protection. He authorized legal trades at the border at Poipet, Cambodia. He was also authorized to catch illegal trades and put them in jail. In 1980, his family received sponsorship to move to the US, to live in Richmond, VA where his 5th child was born. In 1981, the family decided to leave Virginia and head to the northwest and have since chosen to settle in Tacoma, Washington and had three more children. During the last 10 years of his life, he separated from his wife but have remained to be the best of friends, until the very end.
Kuong was a loving husband to his wife, an amazing father to his 8 children, an awesome grandfather, a great uncle, & a true, respectable friend. He enjoyed cooking many delicious cuisines & desserts, gardening, reading, politics & mostly just loved spending time with his family. Despite all the troubles & sufferings life had put him through, he always found a way to smile and try his best to live life to his fullest. One of Kuong’s favorite past time was being silly & laughing his heart out with his family. He had such a great sense of humor and such a unique & contagious laugh that his family will never be able to forget. He was truly blessed, loved, and honored by many who knew him.
Kuong will be laid to rest beside his youngest son, Peter.
