Kathryn Loraine Webb's Obituary
Kathryn passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at the age of 88. Kathryn was born June 26, 1922 in Tacoma, WA. She was the daughter of Wilfrid and Cora (Lomas) Newschwander. Kathryn lived in Tacoma, where she attended Washington Elementary, Mason, and Stadium High School, where she graduated 2nd in her class in 1940. Kathryn went on to attend Reed College in Portland, OR until a sports injury sent her home. She later received her bachelor's and master's degrees in Education from the University of Puget Sound. On September 26, 1943, she married the love of her life, Dr. V. Edward Webb. They spent 25 years sharing a love of boating, sporting events, fishing, and raising two daughters, Priscilla and Mary Kay. He preceded her in death on August 9, 1968. Kathryn taught in the Tacoma Public Schools for over 20 years. Most of those years were spent at Lowell Elementary as a 5th grade teacher. She loved working with her students and being involved in the Tacoma Association of Classroom Teachers. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and PEO. Kathryn enjoyed teaching a Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church for many years. Kathryn loved gardening, sewing on Tuesdays, working crossword puzzles, listening to the Mariners, and watching Husky sports. Her favorite thing above all was being surrounded by her grandchildren and having their favorite treats ready when they came to visit. She will always be remembered as the "treat Grandma".
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her three brothers, Wilfrid (Margaret), James (Margaurite), and Charles (Emma) Newschwander, and brother-in-law Dale Coons. Kathryn is survived by her daughters Priscilla (Micheal) Shiogi of Tacoma and Mary Kay (Mike) Acheson of Port Angeles, WA; her grandchildren Alissa (Curtis) Allen, Jay Shiogi, Daniel (Elizabeth) Acheson, Kyle, Wubi, Tim and Emma Acheson; and her great-grandson Trey Allen. She is also survived by her sister Priscilla (Newschwander) Coons of Irvine, CA, and numerous neices and nephews.
A memorial service will follow a private burial. The memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1315 North Stevens, Tacoma, WA, on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm. The Reverend Daniel D. Shaw will officiate. A reception will follow and all are welcome to attend. The family requests memorial donations may be made to Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care at 2901 Bridgeport Way West, University Place, WA 98466. Kathryn's family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Magnolia Court at the Weatherly Inn and the Franciscan Hospice Care Team for their loving care given to our dear mother.
