June D. “Donnie” Weeks, 93 of Lakewood, passed away on October 25, 2018. Donnie was born June 26, 1925 in Bismarck, North Dakota and graduated with the Class of ’43 from Clover Park High School, Lakewood, WA. As WW II was ending, Donnie volunteered to serve as one of the first and youngest American females on General MacArthur’s Staff in Yokohama, Japan. There, she met the love of her life, 1st Lt Frank D. Weeks Jr. USA. After his death in 2001, Donnie moved to Patriots’ Landing in Dupont, Washington, where she resided until she passed away.
Throughout her life, Donnie was absolutely committed to the welfare of her husband, family, community, and her country. She was the consummate Army wife, mother, friend, volunteer, and community leader. During their lives together, Donnie and Frank lived and traveled throughout Asia, Europe, and America and had three sons and one daughter. No person was ever turned away from her home, regardless of age, condition, or the circumstances that brought them to her door. Donnie always welcomed and cared for those who were hurting, hungry, or in need of comfort.
Donnie’s favorite quote was, “Those who wait also serve.” Her commitment to military families and others led her to establish the Greater Lakes Mental Health Center where her portrait hangs as its founder. During her later years, she joined with friends to establish the Lakewood Historical Society and served as its Treasurer. She worked with the Ft. Lewis Museum providing them historical documents and various artifacts brought home from her service in Japan. Donnie was dedicated to preserving Lakewood, remembering its history, and passing on to its residents a sense of community.
Donnie is survived by her sons Tony (Patty) Weeks, Walla Walla, WA and Mike (Sandy) Weeks, Lakewood, WA and her daughter Shawn (Robby) Weeks-Freeman, St. Simons Island, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank and her son Greg (Patti) Weeks, Tacoma, WA. She has eight grandsons, three granddaughters, three great-grandsons, a great granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews and one adopted neighbor, Bob Brunke, Lakewood, WA. We will all miss her.
Donnie's friends and family wish to thank the staff and management of Patriot's Landing and Franciscan Hospice for their loving care and continuous support of our sweet Donnie.
