Julius "Julie" Laranang Miran's Obituary
Mr. Julius "Julie" L. Miran, Sr., 81 years old, was born on November 27, 1937, in Lantap, Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. He was married to Elena P. Miran, on April 14, 1955, and was blessed with nine children.
Mr. Julius L. Miran was a Reserve Philippine Army and trained in the Military as a Scout Ranger at Fort Ramon Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija, the Philippines in 1962. After his Military training, he got his first job at the Philippine Pharmaceutical Laboratory as a Medical Representative in 1963.
In 1965, he moved his family to Dinalungan, Aurora Province where he was appointed to be the town’s Chief of Police. He fought for Dinalungan’s native people against the anti-government group called New People’s Army (NPA) for 16 years. At one point, he acted as the Mayor for several months due to a growing civil unrest in the town. During his service, he contributed to the town's road developments and infrastructures. He was also the first Parent Teacher Association (PTA) President who initiated and built School buildings with concrete foundations. While being an active Government Official, he managed few businesses like supplying raw materials called “yantok” in making Rattan furniture, managed a small grocery store, bike rentals and a well known 16 mm projection cinema – the town’s first cinema theater.
Due to the unsettling and progressing civil unrest, in 1980, Julie and his family decided to move to his wife, Elena’s province in Mabini, Gamu, Isabela. While his children are growing up and some in College, he decided to go to Saudi Arabia to sustain their financial needs, he worked there as a construction foreman and family driver.
In 1990, Julie decided to come back to the Philippines to be with family and started a different financial venture. He worked in the farm with his family. This is where he trained his children the value of hard work and labor.
In 1995, Julius and Elena moved to the United States through an immediate relative petition by his daughter Ruth. Julie did not waste time and started working with his wife Elena in Alaska. He also worked at a well-known food/clothing establishment in the Tacoma area. Julius retired from work in 2006. He likes to spend his time with carpentry work, gardening, planting vegetable and flowers. He also loves sharing the harvested fruits and vegetables with everyone.
Manong Julie as everybody calls him is friendly and a vibrant husband, father, grandfather, and a great grandfather. He is the life-of-the-family party. Julie loves to sing and dance to the newest beats and moves. He never accepted the thought of growing old but rather embraced the feeling of staying young. Julie was never a fan of walkers, wheelchairs or any mobility aids. He likes to drive his car around town and has been his passion throughout his life.
Julie has medical issues. His battle with Diabetes started in 1997 and was controlled with oral hypoglycemics. On October 23, 2009, he had a stroke that resulted to mild weakness and numbness to his left side with mild slurring of speech. He was able to recover from it slowly with therapies. Another stroke struck him in 2010 that almost incapacitate him. With treatments and continued support from his wife and family, Julie recovered, although he still felt the numbness to his left hand. Consequently, he wears hand gloves for comfort. Julie was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure in 2014 and as a complication from the Diabetes, his kidneys failed resulting in Hemodialysis treatment 3 times a week in 2015. Despite all these medical issues, Julie never asked favors to bring him to his check-up appointments or going to his dialysis appointments – he drove himself for four years, even if his children offered him a ride, he insisted that he can do it.
Manong Julie will be remembered always as a jolly-spirited, fighter and a loving person. His legacy will inspire the lives of all who knows him, especially his family.
