Joyce Caroline Orr's Obituary
Joyce Caroline Goodenow Orr was born July 16, 1928 and died peacefully on January 4, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was born to humble beginnings in Lyons, New York as the 4th child of 6 to Ernest and Bertha Goodenow. Joy lost her mom and her oldest sister before she was a teenager. She was very close to her surviving siblings and their spouses, enjoying many decades of togetherness, laughs and memories.
Joy married the boy next door, Richard “Dick” Sweet Orr on April 12, 1947, in Penn Yan, New York. Dick & Joy followed her brother Al, and moved to Tacoma in the early 1950’s. They resided in Bullhead City, Arizona in the mid-90’s and recently moved back to Tacoma to be closer to family. Their love for each other only grew stronger as each of the 73 years of marriage passed.
Joy had a strong work ethic that she instilled in many. She was a master seamstress, working for many years behind the scenes for Slyter-Magnuson Furniture. Joy had many hobbies that she enjoyed well into her 90’s. Her love of bowling earned her recognition at the PGA professional bowling level. She also loved horse racing, visiting casino’s and playing games on her iPad. Joy never had a drink of alcohol in her life, but was always the life of the party. Her fun, generous and selfless spirit will be missed by all who knew her
Joy is survived by her husband of 73 years, Dick, of Tacoma; Daughter Donna Gering (Steve) of Vashon and daughter Nancy Cruz of Tacoma. Grandchildren Bryan, Angie (Kelly), Joe (Cindy), Ray, Keilani (Rookie), Bobbie and Scott. Joy was also lucky to have known and loved several great-grandchildren that will miss her terribly.
Joy has been on kidney dialysis the past two years, and asked us to remember, honor and support the awesome staff at Davita Dialysis Care Center, in Tacoma Washington American Kidney.
