Joseph Patrick Coonan's Obituary
Joseph Patrick Coonan was born October 20, 1922, in Lancaster, PA to John and Dorothy Coonan and passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2004.Joe was a proud member of the U.S. Army for 27 years. He served in WWII, the Korean War and the War in Vietnam. Joe was a decorated hero, receiving many commendations including the WWII Victory Medal, Legion of Merit, Vietnam Service Medal and Bronze Star. Upon JoeÂ's retirement at the rank of Lt. Colonel, the family settled in Lakewood, WA, where he pursued careers in the insurance and then construction fields.Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lois; children Cathy (Bill) Savage, Marie (Bill) Spencer, John Coonan and David (Tracy) Coonan; grandchildren Jillian, Ryan and Jenna Savage, Jeff (Kim) Evans and Sarah Spencer, Katie, Matthew and Danica Coonan, Danny and Kyle Coonan and great-grandsons Matthew Evans and Samuel Spencer. He is also survived by his sister Joan (Frank) Kreider, brother Jim (Rose) Coonan and sister-in-law Helen Strine.Joe was an amazing man, deeply loved by his family who all miss him dearly. His devotion to family, kind heart and generosity will be his legacy for all who have loved him. He will be forever remembered as a handyman extraordinaire, gourmet cook, for Sunday dinners, Beefeater martinis, fine cigars and Pop-PopÂ's candy cupboard.A special thank you to Cathy Thompson and Bettina Baldtrip of Franciscan Hospice and Barb Clift, Debbie Sandoval and Sandy Waller for their loving care and devotion to Joe during his illness.A service and reception will be held Friday, October 1, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mountain View Celebration of Life Center in Lakewood followed by a graveside service with full military honors at 2:00 p.m. at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.Remembrances may be made to Franciscan Hospice, 2901 Bridgeport Way W, University Place, WA 98466 or online to the American Stroke Association.
