The passing of Joe has caused me to have a heavy heart. I spent four memorable years in Tacoma working with some of the best people the Patrol ever produced. Joe certainly comes within that category. Joe, Lorne and Eric, all gone now, will forever be in my memory. I had a great time working with them and we had some great laughs together. Joe was always asking me to do my John Wayne imitation and never failed to laugh. I wasn't that good but he enjoyed it. To the family I give my best, knowing the family und erstands what best is, because you always had it Rick Myers, Ret. WSP
I met Joe when I transferred to Tacoma in 1973. He was definitely one of the good guys. His frame would fill a door as he walked into a room. He had a smile that would fill the room. He gave guidance to his men and looked out for them. Epitome of the State Patrol Sergeants. Big man, Big heart, knew what he was doing.

Dear Lorna, Debra, Doug, Steve and David, What a extraordinary family led by one extraordinary man and his "true love!" When you moved into our neighborhood you became much more then a new neighbor but true friends. We still recall all the badminton and volleyball games in our back yard ....the long visits...the building of your beautiful home on Woodland Ave...Chris & Kathy staying in your home when you traveled. I was always excited to see you whenever we met in Puyallup. Buzz will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Lorna, I know that time will help you heal as it did me. My love to all of you always...Shirley
Dear Lorna, So sorry for your loss, my friend. I think of your many moves in the later years and wonder how you could accomplish that. I remember meeting you for lunch in Reno, but Buzz was too busy. Such an active fella. His suffering is over, know that we are thinking of you and your family. Dottie & Jerry Heit
It was April of 1966 when I reported to Tacoma fresh out of the WSP academy and ready to begin my first assignment. I was assigned to Detachment I, the freeway and Joe who was a senior Trooper and about to be promoted to Sergeant, was to be my mentor. I rode with him for a while and then he rode with me. It was up to him to decide when and if I was good enough to go on my own. After a few days, Joe gave me the "O.K." with final words of "I'll always be around if you get into trouble or need me". That's pretty much the way it stayed for a long time afterwards. I'm not even able to recall how many times later I thought "Now how would Joe handle a situation like this?"
After 29 years of service and over 20 years of retirement, I cannot recall an individual I respected and admired more than Sergeant Joe Hermann.
It was a privilege to have met and become friends with he and Lorna.
My condolences to her and the rest of the family.
