Helsham, Joseph L's Obituary
Joseph L. Helsham Jr. was born on May 9, 1975, in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, and raised
in Tacoma, Washington, where his presence was felt and his name remembered.
To his family, he was “G.I”—a name rooted in love, familiarity, and shared history.
To others, he was “Mr. X”—a name that carried weight and recognition. If you
know, you know.
Joseph was preceded in passing by his parents, Joseph L. Helsham and
Sosefina L. Helsham. During his life, he lived beyond the years they were given,
and now he rests with them again, along with his beloved grandmother, Etevise
Lavea, whose love and guidance carried him throughout his journey.
Joseph was a leader by nature. He handled business, protected his people, and
took responsibility seriously—always moving with purpose on behalf of his family.
He lived loud and full of life, loving to dance and sing, turning ordinary moments
into memories. Witty, confident, and sometimes a little obnoxious, Joseph never
pretended to be anything other than himself.
Family was everything to him. He leaves behind his one and only daughter,
”Vise” Etefina J. Helsham; his brother, Christopher Helsham; his two sisters,
Josephine Helsham and Hannah Williams; and Leonia Horne, his aunt by
blood but sister by heart. He is also lovingly remembered by his many nieces and
nephews, his aunties and uncles, and his extended family from both the Lavea
and Helsham families, along with countless friends who continue to share his
stories and keep his spirit alive.
Joseph passed away on December 9, 2025, but his presence remains in the
laughter, the music, and the “R”oyalty he left behind.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
