Rev. John T. Logan's Obituary
John Thomas Logan was born to Overton and Rebecca Queen Esther Logan June 4, 1941 in Halifax County, Virginia and passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 6:51 a.m. at Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington.
The oldest of 4 children, John was raised on a farm in Nathalie, Virginia. His family raised all their food and tobacco was their money crop. He worked hard alongside his parents and siblings while growing up. Fondly called J.T., as a child he enjoyed bike riding and playing football. John graduated from Mary Bethune Mcleod High School in 1962 and joined the United States Army a few days later. He enlisted in the infantry and in 1965 reenlisted in aviation maintenance. He graduated from Enterprise State Junior College in Enterprise, Alabama in 1974 with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in General Aviation Technology. While in the military he did two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and many United States duty stations. He retired after 24 years of active duty as a Master Sergeant (E-8) in 1986.
John was baptized in the name of Jesus and filled with the Holy Ghost in December 1977 at Greater Christ Temple Church Tacoma, Washington. He was called into the ministry in 1979 and he became a licensed minister of the United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI). He pastored the Mannheim, Germany Military Fellowship from 1979-1982 while on active duty and Calvary United Pentecostal Church Viernheim, Germany 1986-1994 as an Associate in Missions to Military Ministries Europe. He was ordained under the UPCI on May 10, 1990 in Berchtesgaden, Germany. He returned to Washington state and was employed with the United States Postal Service for many years. He has been an Associate Minister of the Tacoma United Pentecostal Church, now Heritage Pentecostal Church, since 1982.
John valued his family, friendships and times of fellowship. He loved coffee, especially Starbucks lattes (ordering it extra hot) and solving sudoku puzzles. His favorite game was Rummikub. He enjoyed smoking and grilling meats, and his special barbeque sauce was like no other.
A meek and humble man, he genuinely loved and cared for people. If he saw a need, he would not hesitate to assist. Whether providing someone transportation to church or a medical appointment, or visitation to the sick and shut in, he ministered to people.
Above all else, John truly loved God and His Word. His preaching and practical Bible teaching helped many become rooted and grounded in the faith. Only eternity will tell the lives influenced by his life.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Etta and their three children, Janette, James (Kimberly), and Jerome Logan. Sisters Katherine Logan Clark and Loretha Logan Brown, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James Lewis.
