John G. Mansfield's Obituary
John G. Mansfield, Sr. Died April 6, 2008 at age 88. Born in Lewiston, Idaho May 29, 1919 to Fred and Dulcie (Rolph) Mansfield. He was raised in Tacoma and attended Lincoln H.S. class of '38. Dad joined the Navy and served in WWII. He piloted landing craft that picked up US Marines off the islands of Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. He married Florence Marie Johnson of Yakima in 1941. In 1947 Dad joined the Tacoma Fire Department where he worked for 26 years. He was VFW Commander of USS Tacoma Post 2329 in 1951, and a Life Member of Eric G. Sandstrom VFW Post 969. He enjoyed salmon fishing, gardening and RV'ing. After mother passed away in 1979, Dad met Alva "Bunny" Maudin, who became his best friend and traveling companion. They motor-homed around the country for 22 years. He was member of Moose, Tacoma Elks Lodge #174, and Firefighters Union Local 31. Predeceased by his parents and sister Nancy, he is survived by sons John, Jr. (Lori), Ashford, Don (Elaine), University Place, brothers Don, Vic and Fred, sister Roberta, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A service in the Mountain View Garden Chapel will be April 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a graveside ceremony. Our families thank Dad's care providers at St Joseph Medical Center, Franciscan Hospice Care and University Place Care Center.
