John Thomas Frye's Obituary
John T. Frye, born in Topeka, Kansas on October 30, 1939, died on July 2, 2016 in Tacoma, Washington. He was 77 years old.
John was a self-described "farm boy" who joined the armed forces immediately after high school. He spent his life in service, first in active duty in the army, and then as a civil servant at Fort Lewis.
He met the love of his life, Patricia, in Tacoma, where they were married on July 11, 1973. John credited Patricia for straightening him out and showing him how to live a healthy life, without smoking or drinking. John and Patricia had no children, but they treated their niece and nephew (Helen and Richard) as their own.
John was known for his sense of humor and good cheer. Whenever he saw someone in uniform, he made a point to stop and thank that person for their service. He was devoted to his wife, whom he visited every day after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia. He will be sorely missed by friends and family.
He is survived by: Patricia Frye (wife), Ashley Kim and Jason Kim (sister-in-law and brother-in-law), Richard Kim and Julie Ko (nephew and wife), Ryan Kim (great-nephew), Helen Kim and Michael McDonough (niece and husband), and Rory & Olivia McDonough (great-nephew and great-niece).
The funeral and service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, July 13, at Mountain View Funeral Home Aspen Chapel. The viewing will take place on Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12, 10am - 6pm. This July 11 marks what would have been John and Patricia's 43rd wedding anniversary.
After the service, guests are invited to attend a Buddhist ceremony and Korean meal at the Buddhist temple John used to attend: Seu Mi Sa Temple (227 E 72nd St., Tacoma).
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would like to suggest donating to the Alzheimer's Association.
