John "Nellie" Nelson
An inspiration to two decades of Pacific Lutheran football players, coaches and fans, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009, at the age of 44. Nelson died at his residence, Avamere Heritage Rehabilitation Center in Tacoma, surrounded by several dozen current PLU football players and coaches. Nelson served in recent years as a PLU football volunteer assistant coach. Nelson was born on Dec. 20, 1964, in Singapore with a disease that locked all of his joints from the neck down. He first became aware of the PLU football program in 1989 while a student at the university. A memorial celebrating his life will be held on the PLU campus in Olson Auditorium at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 6.
