My deepest sympathy goes out to the Marez family. I was extremely grieved to hear of the the loss of Joe. I spent three wonderful years with the Marez family through Valerie. Every encounter I've shared with Joe was always pleaseant and we had a common bond that always carrried our conversations for extended periods. That bond was the Army and we were both First Sergeants, so needless to say...we always had a lot of war stories to share with each other. Our greetings and conversations always ended with "Diamonds are forever" signifying the Diamond in our military rank. Joe, you will be missed. Diamonds are forever. I'll see you later.

I am very saddened by the passing of Joe. His daughter Valerie who passed away on August 8, 2003 was my best friend for over 20 years. Joe could talk and talk about his expriences in the Army. His daugher and I would always smile at each other when Joe came for family gatherings with his black shoes shinning away. I have always been very close to the Marez family and enjoyed the many years of social gatherings. Anthony and Kevin,I applaud you both. You have been so strong thru all of this. Joe was also my hero. My father was SFC WW Curtis and was KIA in Korea. He was with "K" co. Joe took the time to talk to me about the war, and my dad (who is buried at Ft. Lewis).
I have been honored to be able to talk to those who were in Korea. Joe kept telling me he would talk to me as long as I needed. We cried together. What a wonderful thing he did for me.
He is now singing with the angels and talking to the "guys" he missed so much.
My sympathy to you his family. He was a HERO and will not be forgotten.

To Joe's Family:
Joe was the first real hero I have ever met. I have known people who have faced problems and adversity heroically, but never a real hero such as was Joe in his Korean Conflict experience. Joe was a hero in other ways, not just military. He showed me his scrapbooks and talked of his history, coming out of a little town and creating a successful adult life for himself all by himself. His devotion to the military itself was also of heroic proportions. His history project, his trips to Ft Lewis, his obvious pride in still being connected. I still see in my mind's eye his shoes, all polished and shiny, stretched out in a row as if ready for daily inspection. And I will not be able to listen to jazz without thinking about Joe.
