Dear Merton (and the boys)--I didn't see this until today. Joanne was my roommate during our freshman year at Seattle U. Stephen and I got married the end of my sophomore year, and moved to Connecticut and just recently moved back to the Tacoma area. I have always had fond memories of Joanne and of you two together. I am so sorry we never reconnected after I moved to Connecticut. Your younger two boys are very close in age to our third and fourth boys. Joanne was a strong and wonderful woman even as young as we were then. After reading her obituary, I am not one bit surprised at her accomplishments; she was an amazing person. Dear Merton, Eric, Joe, and Peter,
I had lost touch with Joanne until her sister-in-law happened into my shop in Bothell this past summer. She filled me in and put us in touch. I had a wonderful, long phone conversation with her, and hoped to come visit, but my sister Elenor was diagnosed with cancer and I have been getting her in for her chemo treatments, and no longer had the spare time for a visit. When I heard two days ago that Joanne had died, I felt so much loss. She was one of my oldest friends. We met during Orientation week our freshman year at Seattle U. My husband Rod and I visited in Lacey several times and were Erik's godparents. She and I were Political Science majors together, and lived on the same floor for three years in the dorm at SU. My memories of Joanne are many. She never stopped moving, she was always bustling from one project to another. Wonderful smells were always coming from the kitchen next to her dorm room as she cooked for herself and Mert. I remember watching her playing the piano, her pink-tipped tongue parting her lips as she concentrated on her music. She was an optimist with a tender heart, always forgiving even if someone was unkind to her. I remember her falling in love with Merton. He was the great love of her life. He always seemed a little surprised that she had selected him, but once the relationship began, they were rarely ever apart. She used to panic all of us during tests at school; the test paper would be handed out and Joanne would whip through in about 15 minutes. I would still be laboring a half hour later. She later confessed her motivator for fast testing was an overactive bladder--but she was always acing those tests. She was utterly in love with her boys. She was so proud of them and all of their achievements; she never lost hope that they would overcome any problems they might encounter. God speed, Joanne. Dear Merton! I know how proud you must be of the legacy left by Joanne at St. Frances Cabrini. How wonderful that you and she were able to give back to your very own Alma Mater. A lot of parents thank the Lord for the day Joanne was hired as principal at our fledgling little Catholic school in Gig Harbor many years ago. Friendships were sealed for life. We got a lot more than leadership, direction, focus and academic excellence...we had a surrogate mother with a keen sense of protection and an abundance of affection. I speak on behalf of many who have not yet come to know of our great loss...farewell, much loved friend and thank you for being bigger than life in our little part of the world!

Joanne Lott was one of the most dedicated teachers and principals I knew. When she ran the annual auction for Saint Frances Cabrini School, she was a slave driver with the parent volunteers, but she did that to ensure the occasion was pleasant and memorable for the guests, so they would donate year after year to make her school the best it could be. She also pushed her students and worked them hard to learn as much as they possibly could. She was successful in every way.

I was so lucky that Joanne reached out to me we had a couple of good visits. I was looking forward to spending more time with her. Hug your family and friends life is to short. I know she is watching over me now.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Merton and Joanne's boys and family. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of us who knew and worked with and loved Joanne for so many years. I can still hear her laughter flowing through the hallways of the school and gratefully remember all the things she did for her students, for the staff, for me, for the school and parish. You have to go a long way to find someone in this world as generous with her time, as generous in her willingness to help; to give her exceptional talents and goodness to everyone. The world is a little less with her passing but I have no doubt that heaven is rejoicing with her presence. Now, for us, it's a matter of adjusting to the reality that a very special person has left us.

I loved Joanne from the first day I met her. She taught math to 2 of my daughters and instilled in them a love and respect for math (one is currently working on a PhD in Math Education and the other graduated in Systems Engineering). She was an astute administrator. She brought so much love and expertise to her job at St. France's Cabrini. I enjoyed a field trip with her to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and my oldest daughter loved the field trip she organized to Mt. St. Helens. My daughters both participated in the Shakespeare plays she produce at St. France's Cabrini and also participated in Odyssey of the Mind, which she supported. I admired Joanne immensely and always felt so fortunate that she was my daughters' teacher.

Ms. Lott "Joanne " and I met 2007 as she needed volunteers for the technology part of the Annual Auction she loved technology and wanted St Frances to be part of the work of smarter not harder tradition. I had said I work in that field and would be glad to help in anyway I could little did I know that Joanne would empower me with all the responsibility as the chair of the committee, I had never been in that position but Joanne assured me we would get it done.

Well we did and we had a very successful auction that year and many more to follow. Joanne had a way to empower people to their fullest, I then became part of the church facility planning committee as well as a member of the school commission some of the best memories I have ever had thank you Joanne !

Joanne was a true friend and opened many doors for me soon after ...She had such an impact on my life I cant even begin explain, her light hearted attitude and her we can get it done come on attitude change my life.

She was a great influence in my boys education at Cabrini, there was never a challenge but an opportunity that was always achieved. I had the great pleasure to meet her family sons and husband and I am so grateful to have had Joanne in my life when so many things were changing.

Thank you to the Lott family for the many sacrifices you endure while Joanne was touching so many lives .
