Jerry "Gary" Baker's Obituary
Gerald Patrick Baker, lovingly known as Gary and Jerry, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at the age of 87.
He was born on January 19, 1939, to Sophie P. Earl and Raymond Moss. He was raised by his mother, Sophie, and his stepfather, Frank “Spike” Baker. Born and raised proud to be a member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, he carried that pride with him throughout his life.
A gentle soul with endless patience and a tireless work ethic, Jerry was the patriarch of his family and an incredible son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, and uncle. He showed his love quietly and consistently, never seeking recognition, simply showing up day after day for the people he loved.
He was the devoted husband of Penny Baker. Together they shared 53 years of life, building a marriage rooted in faith, commitment, and family. He was a proud father to their nine children and “Pappa” to sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. His family was truly the joy of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Sam Baker; and his grandson, Lance Baker.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Penny; their children, Tarri (Jeff) Lee, Cherie Baker, Sandi Baker, Jolene (Kyle) Wicks, Billy (Carol) Boone, Elaine (Steve) Sager, George (Katie) Meyers, and Lois Meyers; their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Kathy Kenyon (Baker); and five brothers, Mike Baker, Jim Baker, Danny Baker, Mike Moss, and Dennis Moss.
Jerry retired from the City of Tacoma Public Works after 38 years of dedicated service. He was known as a dependable and hardworking man who took pride in providing for his family. Jerry was a man of deep faith, a born-again, Spirit-filled Christian. He devoted much of his life to ministry and community outreach through The Gathering Place Fellowship, By His Word, Homeless Veterans Ministries, and Hilltop street and bus ministries. Serving others was simply who he was.
He loved the simple joys of life, especially fishing, where he found peace and quiet moments along the water. He also enjoyed cheering on the Mariners and the Seahawks, playing cards and board games with family, working in his yard, and tinkering around the house. He faithfully attended his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, always present and always supportive. And if you were lucky enough to hear his laugh, you know it was a full-body giggle that made everyone around him smile.
His deep faith carried him through many health struggles over the years. In the end, he was ready. There is no doubt that heaven welcomed him with open arms. He is now at peace, pain free, and comfortably seated, enjoying the best buffet heaven has to offer.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. His steady presence, servant’s heart, and unwavering faith leave a legacy that will continue through the generations he loved so well.
